The Big Music Quiz
Once a month — usually the second Wednesday — Hot Box Live turns into Chelmsford’s liveliest music quiz. It covers every genre and every era, running from laughably easy warm-up rounds to the kind of question that stumps the whole room. Doors open at 7pm and the bar stays open throughout, so it’s a proper night out, not just a quiz.
How it works
One £6 ticket covers your whole table, however big your team, so it’s built for turning up with mates, or making friends with strangers on the night. Bring a creative team name — half the fun is hearing what people come up with. There are prizes throughout, a trophy for the winners and one for the losers, and every quiz ends with a shot at Dave’s Dastardly Question — a genuinely hard closer whose cash pot starts at £10 and grows by £10 every quiz until someone cracks it.
Why it matters
Not everyone who comes to Hot Box is here for a gig, and the quiz is one of the easiest ways in — it’s cheap, sociable, and doesn’t ask you to know anything about the local music scene to have a good night. It’s part of a wider programme of nights that make Hot Box feel like a community space as much as a venue.
Good to know
The Big Music Quiz is nearly always on the second Wednesday of the month (very occasionally it skips a month). Doors open at 7pm and questions start from 8pm. Tickets are £6 per table and, like all our events, are sold through DICE on our What’s On page. Tables can sell out, so it’s worth booking ahead rather than turning up on the night. Under-18s are welcome with an adult.
Getting here
Hot Box Live is under the railway arches at 28-29 Viaduct Road, Chelmsford (CM1 1TS), a 2-minute walk from Chelmsford train station. If you’re driving, parking on Viaduct Road is free after 5pm, and the NCP car park at Chelmsford station (right behind us) and Fairfield Road car park are both close by.
We don’t serve hot food, so grab something to eat in the city centre before you come.

Do I need to book?
It’s best to. Tables can sell out, so book ahead rather than turning up on the night.
How big can my team be?
Any size. One ticket covers your whole table, however many of you there are.
What time does it start?

Is the venue accessible?
Yes. The ground floor is step-free, including the main room, the bar and an accessible toilet. Get in touch in advance if you’d like us to save you a seat.
